Read the
following notes regardless of whether you are installing for the first time or
upgrading!
- For basic
instructions on a new installation, see the graphic file: Install.gif --
only DateBk5.prc has to be installed.
- Make sure you have at
least 600k of free memory prior to installing Datebk5.
- The DateBk3 and DateBk4
programs and only the programs with those specific names should be removed
prior to installing DateBk5. If you are tight on memory, you may wish to
use DateBk4 (460k) or DateBk3 (275k). Leave the DateBk3DB or DateBk4DB
preference database so DateBk5 picks up your preference settings. Don't
blindly install all the PRC files in this zip archive - most of them are only
for special use which you should read up on first!
- A
comprehensive 100+ page Manual
is available in PDF format from http://www.PimlicoSoftware.com/datebk5-manual.zip. This requires Acrobat
Reader which you can download freely from www.adobe.com if you do not have it.
If you have trouble getting it to save locally, right-click the link (MAC:
Option/Click) to save it. This Zip archive also includes the manual on dbIcon.
- If you are moving DateBk5
into flash memory after loading it, do a SOFT RESET after copying the
application to flash (avoids Fatal Exception on any pending alarm)
- HANDSPRING VISOR USERS: Datebook+
has the same problem as old versions of DateBk3 with respect to floating
events (see note in second section below). Make sure you uncheck
the option Float Advance At Midnight in
the Display Options dialog of the Preferences dialog, so DateBook+ does not run automatically at midnight (I suggest you change the default datebook application to the standard ROM datebook application). If you have a Visor with OS
3.1, most likely you will want to install the Stub application to mask Datebook+ (see: http://www.pimlicosoftware.com/dtbkplusstub.zip) to prevent this from
happening altogether. This stub
also prevents DateBook+ from generating
duplicate alarms. This stub does not help on OS 3.5 devices
(Platinum/Prism), so in that case you will need to be sure to run DateBk5
after every hotsync to avoid duplicate alarms.
Note: if you choose to remove
DateBk5 and go back to Datebook+, remember
that completed events will likely be moved to Today
by Datebook+. To avoid this, do a hotsync, THEN remove DateBk5, then set the desktop to
overwrite the handheld for the Datebook database
and hotsync again and you will have no problems.
Note: There is a significant bug in
Handspring's OS 1.4 update which can cause a crash with a "Blitter.c"
error. If you are using this 1.4 update, you should download
the OS 1.5 update that fixes this bug:.HS Updater 3.5.2v1.5
- PRIOR/ACTIVE
ACTION NAMES USERS. Initial release of DateBk5 may trip an
INSUFFICIENT MEMORY error if you use an icon collection with too many icons.
Right now, DateBk4 only handles up to 255 icons. Greatly exceeding that number
could cause this problem. You may want to save a copy of the icon collection
you are using and then use dbIcon to just save the first 255 icons of that
collection.
- ADDR/TODO/MEMO buttons can open up split-screens in
DateBk5 instead of launching native applications. You can close this window by
tapping on the menu icon (down-arrow) at top left. This is a preference option
that you can easily enable (select Views tab in the main Preferences
dialog, then select the appropriate button (or hyphen if not wanted) as a number
from 1-4 (going from left to right) to select which button invokes that
function). You
can also use these buttons to launch special DateBk5 mini-apps which will
run DateBk5 with a specific saved view. The zip archive has four
mini-apps, dbAddr, dbTodo, dbMemo and dbView. When you run one of
these mini-apps it tells DateBk5 to launch a saved view with the name dbXxxx,
where Xxxx are the last four characters of the name of the
mini-app. To create a view, set up DateBk5 just how you want it to look. TapAndHold on the the
left-most view button (DayView) and select Custom/Saved
View from the list. Tap on the NEW button, and enter the name
for the saved view and tap the OK button.
- Launch Addressbook, MemoPad,
ToDo in split-screen
from outside of DateBk5. You can now assign a launch
mini-app to a hardware button, calculator or pen stroke, by bringing up
the main Palm OS application screen with the icons, select Buttons
from the popup list at top right and then select the launch mini-app in
the popup list next to the button or function you want to invoke the saved
view. You can also change the name of the launch mini-app to anything you
want using a third party file utility like Z'Catalog
or Filez. You may also find it useful to use a
hack like AppHack which allows you to assign
more functions to a single button and therefore more saved views, etc.
Four mini-apps are included in the zip archive, but you will need to
create the saved views for them.
- Problem Hacks - there are some hacks with bugs that are
known to cause problems (these problems may have already been fixed)
GadgetHack - fails to post proper refresh event
and can therefore cause the split-screen menu icon not to be redrawn after
gadget hacks has erased it.
LogoHack - same problem - can cause date on top
line not to be refreshed properly.
TrekSoundsHack - early versions had same
problem, latest version apparently has some new problem too(?)
Glowhack - there some reports of redraw issues
that also sound like this same problem.
In all cases, if you see a problem, contact author for latest update in
case problem has now been fixed.
- Left-handed users: you may wish to use the freeware
program "Lefty.prc" which sets a
system-wide flag that many programs use to acknowledge that the user is
left-handed. Datebk5 will swap the scroll bars in the split-screen and ToDo dialogs if you run this program and check the
box. However, it is likely that you may also want to use LeftHack to make other adjustments to system dialogs,
the note dialog, etc. If you run LeftHack, you
should DEFINITELY run Lefty as LeftHack is not
sufficient to correct some of the left-handed issues.
- Weird colors? No Grayscale?:
If you are updating from an older version of DateBk5, this can happen. Go
into the color/gray selection dialog (for an event, ToDo
or category profile) and tap the Reset Palettes button to set the
default palette selection.
- Beaming Issue: If you remove DateBk5, and are having
problems beaming, run dbScan and tap on the
button: Reset DTBK Beaming.This
particular problem is due to a flaw in the Palm OS as it fails to reset an
internal latch when a Soft Reset is performed.
- Saved Views. Before using this feature, please read the
manual, as this very powerful feature often causes some confusion at
first, but is one of DateBk5's most useful features.
- Duplicate Alarms. There is an applet, dbAlarm.prc that you can install to prevent duplicate
alarms from the built-in datebook application.
However, note that you should not delete it from the Palm OS Launcher
unless it tells you that it is safe to do so when you tap the icon itself (tap
on the icon which says Tap To Delete for removal instructions). Also
note the following restriction: with dbAlarm installed, you will not
be able to receive events beamed to you from the regular Datebook application
unless you temporarily disable it (there is a checkbox in the BEAM tab of the
main preferences that allows you to temporarily disable dbAlarm). This is only
of significance if the person beaming to you does not have DateBk4 or DateBk5. You
will need to download this applet from www.PimlicoSoftware.com.
- OS
V-5.0 Compatibility.
This version of DateBk5 was prepared and tested against a pre-release version
of Palm OS 5.0. If you are using OS V-5.0, we strongly suggest that you check
back with the Pimlico Software web site: www.PimlicoSoftware.com to see if
there are updated versions available which have been validated against the
final shipping version of Palm OS 5.0.
Read the
following notes if you are upgrading from an existing version of datebk3 or
datebk4
Remove DateBk3/DateBk4. You will
want to delete DateBk3 or DateBk4 before installing DateBk5. Just delete the single
entry with the precise name DateBk3 or DateBk4. Do not delete
any other files. Leave the DateBk3DB/DateBk4DB
preference database alone for a while as it takes little room and that way you
can re-install DateBk3 without losing your registration code or preferences.
DateBK5 will use the existing DateBk4DB preferences to preset the DateBk5DB
preferences
Don't run DateBk3. If you run
Datebk3 after running Datebk4 or DateBk5, all your completed floating events will be moved
to Today as Datebk3 does not recognize the new feature
in Datebk4/5 of having completed floating events distinct from completed
appt-type events, so it treats ALL floating events as incomplete. If you plan
on doing this, it is suggested that you purge all your DONE events and archive
them first, or download V-3.0u of Datebk3 which has now been posted and which
should avoid this problem caused by changes in Datebk4/5 that were not backwards
compatible with Datebk3. You can also do a hotsync, then remove DateBk4/5, set the desktop to overwrite the
handheld for the datebook database and hotsync again to avoid this problem.
Where is the Diamond Button? The
Saved Views button is no longer displayed by default in V-4.0d and later
versions. To display it, you will need to unselect at least one of the existing
six views (Go to Options menu in day view, Preferences dialog and
observe new preference setting for DisplayViews
- you can pick from one to six of the seven views to display. A TapAndHold on the Day View button brings up a new view
selection dialog that lists ALL views including the startup and saved views.
Datebk4/5 has a new registration system from
DateBk3.
Your Datebk3 registration code will not work with it. Datebk4/5 is $24.95 for new
users and $10 for registered Datebk3 users. DateBk5 is a free upgrade to
all registered DateBk4 users.
Read the
following notes if you had a problem after installing this new version
Duplicate Alarms? To avoid
duplicate alarms, just run DateBk5 after every hotsync. There is even a freeware
hack called SyncBack that will do this automatically (available from www.PalmGear.com
and other Palm software archives). Alternatively, you can
download the applet dbAlarm.prc from the Pimlico website (http://www.PimlicoSoftware.com/dbalarm.zip).
This is
a tiny applet that will prevent duplicate alarms from the built-in datebook application and also ensure that new alarms
from the desktop are recognized. I do not include this applet in the
standard zip archive because otherwise some people will install it without
reading any documentation and will then blindly delete it and then wonder why
they have a problem(!). To remove the applet, uncheck the
box DateBk5 Handles Alarms in DateBk5's Alarms tab in the
Preferences dialog (or use a third party file utility to remove it). Tap on
the icon labeled Tap To Delete to confirm that you can now safely
delete dbAlarm from the standard Palm OS application launcher screen.
Preferences not 'sticking'? Or
unexpectedly changing? This is precisely what happens if you use saved views
without realizing that they change all preference settings every time
you invoke them.
Strange Problems/Errors?
If you have a lot of strange problems immediately after installing DateBk5 on
top of a prior version, please delete your dateBk4DB/DateBk5DB preference database, run
DateBk5 and re-enter your preferences (and registration if you are a registered
user).
Installing over a
different language?
If you are changing languages, you must pre-delete the old copy of
DateBk5 prior to installing the version in a different language..
Addressbook Won't launch. If
you have trouble launching the addressbook app, check
that the setting at the bottom right of the preference dialog for the
split-screen (menu icon on window title bar at top left), has the 4-character
sequence: addr for the built-in Rom Application.
Datebook Database won't Sync. If
you have trouble synching the datebook database after installing DateBk5,
completely remove and re-install your conduit software. This is not a DateBk5
issue but rather a flaw that sometimes occurs when installing/removing third
party software a remove/re-install always
corrects this problem.
Check for updates. Go to the
website: http://www.PimlicoSoftware.com and make sure you have the latest
version - the problem you are seeing may have already been fixed.
Scan the FAQ's. The Frequently
Asked Questions page on the web: http://www.PimlicoSoftware.com/datebk4faq.htm
(or http://www.PimlicoSoftware.com/datebk5faq.htm)
may well answer your question, so check that first.
Read the Manual before reporting
any problems - especially if you are not 100% sure that it is a problem - the
100+ Page manual in PDF format can be downloaded
from http://www.PimlicoSoftware.com/datebk5-manual.zip. This requires Acrobat
Reader which you can download freely from www.adobe.com if you do not have it. Right-click the link if you have difficulty getting your browser to
download it. Remember that DateBk5 has a fairly extensive built-in help
system (tap on the 'i' at the top right of the window
title bars).
Right-to-Left Hacks: If you are
using a hack that support right-to-left writing, you will not be able to use
color for events. This issue may be addressed in future maintenance
releases.
Non-Roman Language.
If you are using a non-Roman language, be sure to set the non-Roman Chars
option in the second weekly view!
Japanese/JOS is not supported in this release.
I have not addressed all Japanese language issues in Datebk5, so Japanese users
should continue to use Japanese version of Datebk3 and wait for a later
maintenance release of DateBk5
Basic Tech Support: If you have
problems with the basic installation, getting a permanent registration code
after registering electronically or other 'setup' problem, send an email to: PimlicoSupport@bigfoot.com.
Advanced Tech Support: If you are
an experienced user and have run into a more advanced problem, you can fill out
a tech report form (copy in archive) and send it to: SWSupport@PimlicoSoftware.com.
MAC HotSync Problems: If you are
using a MAC and having hotsync problems - try
allocating more memory to the HotSync Manager and the Conduit Manager say from
2048k to 3072k or even more.
Other Languages.
German is available in DateBk4. German and other languages are in process for
DateBk5
